Chapter Twelve
Dropping his head into the sweet hollow of her neck, Zach breathed deeply of her earthy scent, aware as he had never been aware before that Abby was someone special and precious. In that moment he realized that he must have had an unconscious reason for bringing her to Fort Lyon, and as soon as he was thinking clearly that reason would present itself. He greatly feared that once all the pieces fell into place, his life would never be the same. Yet if that life included Abby, he would welcome the change. Convincing Abby might be a problem, but he would face it when the time came.
Abby shifted beneath Zach, taking comfort in the solid weight of him resting atop her. Though she knew making love with Zach was considered wrong according to both the Cheyenne and white cultures, she felt no shame in the act. It might be the last memory she had of him if she left Fort Lyon as she planned. She looked up at him, searching his face for some hint of his thoughts. He smiled in response as he eased off her.
"I'd like to keep you here all night," he sighed regretfully, "but I fear I've already ruined your reputation by keeping you this long. Those men know where you've been and are vicious enough to spread gossip."
"The people at the fort already think the worst of me. They can do me no more harm. But you're rightit is time I left. The Porters will be worried."
"I didn't mean for things to get out of control, Abby, but I'm not sorry. Things always seem to happen when I'm around you. I'm taking a scouting expedition across the border into Kansas tomorrow. There have been reports of Indians raiding homesteaders. But when I return, there are things to be settled between us."
Abby averted her gaze, fearing her expression would alert Zach to her intention of leaving the fort. After what had happened in this room tonight, leaving was the only answer. Since there were no herbs in the woods for her to collect so late in the year, she could not afford to remain and become tied to Zach by a child. If Zach was going to be away from Fort Lyon for a few days, it would be the perfect opportunity for her to return to her people without being pursued. After literally falling into his bed tonight, Abby wasn't so naive as to think it wouldn't happen again. Something potent and compelling existed between her and Zach, and the longer she remained at the fort, the harder it would be to part from him.
"We will speak of those things when you return," Abby hedged as she rose from the cot and gathered her clothes from where Zach had flung them when he had undressed her. "I must return to the Porters before Pete comes searching for me."
Zach gave reluctant agreement, rising and helping her dress. "I'll see you home."
"There is no need."
"Don't argue, Abby.
